Escape the crowds jostling for space on the caldera rim by staying on the south and east coasts, where the dark volcanic beaches are lapped by beautifully clear Aegean waters. Hiring a small car or quad bike is one of the best ways to explore the tiny island, nipping along the narrow, twisting roads to the black and red sand beaches around the curving south and east coastline or the whitewashed villages that cling to the west.
